ImageWhat's up with those lines in your video?

You may have noticed that some of your video has these horizontal bars or lines cutting through it.  That is because your standard NTSC video camera records video on two separate fields.  Half on "field A" and the other half on "field B" at 29.7 frames a second.  On a tv screen you do not notice this effect because tvs "flicker" but on a computer this can cause video degradation.  De-interlacing your video strips out one of those fields and holds it for two frames making it easier for computer processors to play back your video.

Why does this matter?

When video is upload to the Epic Underground website it is converted into an Adobe Flash file.  During this conversion process it has to take all of those bits of information and render them into a finished Flash movie.  With twice as many fields in a standard video the compression quality dips down to try and accommodate all of that extra information.  That is why you see the quality get worse during scenes with a lot of action.  To reduce the number of artifacts in your video we recommend de-interlacing your video.

A de-interlaced video takes less processor load and therefore it can use the extra bandwidth to increase the quality of the conversion.

How do you de-interlace your video?

Most video editing software will have a de-interlace option when rendering your video.  Here are a few:

Adobe Premier Pro

  1. Choose: File/ export/ movie.
  2. Select: Settings...
  3. Choose: "Key Frame and Rendering" from the Export Movie Settings.
  4. Select the Check box "Deinterlace Video Footage" option.

Final Cut Pro

There are two methods for de-interlacing your video in Final Cut Pro.  (Let us know which one you prefer)

  • The De-Interlace Filter is located in the Video Folder of the Effects Tab
  • Go to the Filters tab and enable the "Deinterlace" filter. You may also enable the "Denoise" filter to reduce the image noise (the denoise filter will also activate a better deinterlace method).
